Flight Edging for Grain Augers
Flight Edging for Grain Augers
Screw conveyors like grain augers have a small amount of clearance between the inside diameter of the grain auger barrel (spiral welded tubes) and the outside rim of the conical flight (referred to as spiral flight). This clearance allows for the spiral flighting to move freely within the grain auger barrel, but also causes fall back of the grain, beans or other bulk material within the auger. The result of this action is a volume flow inefficiency, as the wheat is conveyed multiple times before it is successfully discharged.
Flight edging provides an additional ‘lip’ applied to the edge of the spiral flighting and thus serves two major functions. Firstly, it helps to greatly reduce or eliminate the wheat fall back, as it seals the clearance gap between the inside of the grain auger barrel and the outer edge of the spiral flighting. And secondly, it provides a softer glide of the conical or spiral flight against the inside wall of the auger, thus reducing wear and increasing the life span of the auger. In other words, it eliminates the metal on metal fatigue that grain augers are renowned for. The flight edging also helps clean the inside of the auger by preventing a build up of the grain or bulk material being conveyed.
